- Students now have the opportunity to join many more extracurricular activities, including Safety Patrol, Yearbook Club, etc!
- Students are given bigger responsibilities and lead the school in morning prayer and announcements.
- Students serve in weekly Masses by being altar servers, lectors, etc.
- Students earn “class cash” by completely monthly jobs and can spend their earned income every two weeks in the class store!
A Typical Day in Fifth Grade at SM/MCA
5th grade is an important year during which our children learn to transition from elementary school to middle school. Our mornings consist of our math, reading, and writing blocks as these are the foundations on which most of our education rests. During the afternoons, we switch to social studies, science, and spelling/grammar. All of our blocks include direct instruction, independent work time, small group intervention, and centers. Students learn how to take notes by utilizing interactive notebooks which helps prepare them for independent note taking in the coming years.
5th grade is also an exciting year because the students have the opportunity to participate in many clubs. Specifically, this is the first year that students are able to join Kindness Crew, Service Squad, Safety Patrol, and Yearbook. The students are also given monthly jobs for which they can earn “class cash” and spend their money every two weeks in our class store.
Fifth Grade Highlights
Reading
Students learn the following by using mentor texts and novel studies:
- Basic story elements
- Inferences
- Theme
- Main Idea
- Summarizing
- Comparing and contrasting literature
- Text Structure
- Drama and Poetry
- Visual and Multimedia in Literature (focus on poetry and drama)
- Students also have independent reading time each day, during which I hold reading conferences to discuss the novels the students are reading
Writing
Students spend approximately 9 weeks on each of the following three major types of writing (narrative, persuasive, and informational) ending the year with poetry
- Narrative
- Persuasive
- Informational
- Poetry
- Students are given time each day to work on writing as it is a skill that is underdeveloped in many students
- Students will move through the writing process (brainstorm, write, revise, edit, publish) and gain confidence in their writing ability through writing on many different topics
- Daily instruction and center provided
Spelling and Grammar
- Daily spelling center
- Daily grammar center that includes Google Slides Activities
- Grammar Focus on:
- Affixes
- Roots
- Idioms, Adages, and Proverbs
- Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homographs
- Conjunctions, Prepositions, and Interjections
- Titles, Commas, and Quotations
- Figurative Language
Math
Students learn the following through direct instruction, small group work, and daily centers:
- Multiplication and Division
- Order of Operations
- Expressions
- Volume
- Measurement and Conversions
- 2-D shapes
- Decimals and the Powers of 10

- Hands-on labs and experiments to reinforce main ideas and scientific laws

- Mostly project-based learning
